One glorious backwards glance

On Fashion Week’s Friday 24 at 5pm, 900 fashion industry VIPs and 100 members of the public will indulge in one glorious look back over New Zealand Fashion Week’s 10 years - the New Zealand Fashion Week Retrospective show presented by Affinage.

Veteran of the entire 10 years, producer Yasmin Farry is the ringmaster.  A longtime producer but also ex-dancer and former owner of the Kuja lounge, she’s been working since June of this year, with help from stylist Atip Wananuruks, going through designers’ archives and collaborating with some 40 designers.  They’ve been making a final selection of 80-90 outfits to showcase, covering 2001 to 2009 and with a sprinkling of newer designers from 2010.

To be held in Fashion Week’s largest venue, Shed 1, the show will see garments grouped by look and feel rather than chronologically, and will incorporate music by Sophie Findlay and archival footage compiled and edited by Brendon Dixon.  Yasmin doesn’t want to give anything away but given that her work outside fashion is heavy on multi-media and music show production, it’s fair to expect something of a spectacular.

Each year Yasmin works on some dozen New Zealand Fashion Week shows, although this year she is to produce a record-breaking 14.  Her work has run the gamut of onsite and offsite, classic and multi-media shows, with her first ever NZFW show produced for Sabatini at the Auckland Town Hall in 2001.

She’s hesitant to name favourites but admits that she loves working with Nom*D (she makes special mention of last year’s multimedia show at the Sky City Theatre) and that she was really pleased with Cybele’s opening show at last year’s Fashion Week.

New to New Zealand Fashion Week, partner Affinage is proud to be presenting the  Retrospective Show.
